For the clients of Ozcare St Elizabeth Villa Mackay, a visit to the hair salon is about much more than a fresh cut or style. It’s also a chance to relax, share a story and enjoy time with someone who genuinely cares.
Judy has been looking after clients’ hair at St Elizabeth Villa every week since the aged care facility opened five years ago. With 40 years of hairdressing experience, she brings plenty of skill to the salon, but it’s her kindness and interest in each client that make her visits particularly special.
“I get to know everyone’s personalities, and I love having a chat,” Judy said. “I just like looking after them and making clients feel special. They really appreciate it.”
Meet Judy: 40 years of hairdressing experience
Judy’s connection with aged care began in England when she was just 21 and newly qualified as a hairdresser. Although she later moved away from aged care and ran her own salon, she never lost her fondness for working with older people.
“I’ve always loved hearing their stories,” she said. “As I’ve grown older, working in aged care has become a job that really suits my lifestyle.”
Over the years, Judy has formed meaningful connections with many clients. She remembers their stories, notices when someone has been away and celebrates the good news they share with her.
Why connection matters as much as a haircut
While clients may come to Judy for a haircut, they also receive her time, patience and undivided attention. Every appointment is another opportunity to help someone feel cared for, confident and like themselves.

Advice for hairdressers considering aged care
For hairdressers considering working in aged care, Judy’s advice is simple.
“Be kind, patient and nice to people, because we’re all going to be there one day.”
After four decades in the industry, Judy’s work is still about much more than hair. Through every appointment and conversation, she contributes to the sense of community, comfort and connection that makes St Elizabeth Villa feel like home.
