A convoy of trucks arrived at Ozcare’s Villa Vincent aged care facility to begin the process of donating hundreds of pieces of furniture to Townsville’s flood recovery effort.

Earlier this month, St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland took delivery of over 500 pieces of furniture, including couches, dining chairs, tables and outdoor furniture, in an effort to help out hundreds of families struggling to refurnish their homes.

The flood-hit Townsville region has received donations from communities from across the region since the devastating rain event in February wiped out properties in many suburbs, including Rosslea and Idalia.

Ozcare’s Facility Manager Peter Richardson said it was hoped the furniture donations would support those families most in need, especially many elderly residents who had lost everything in the flood.

“We have looked after 13 people who have been unable to return to their homes because of the damage from the flooding in areas like Rosslea and many will be staying with us permanently as they are unable to return home,” Mr Richardson said.

“We are undergoing a renovation at the moment and are replacing all of our older used furniture in the common areas so we hope this used furniture, in good condition, can go some way towards helping those people in the process of rebuilding their lives.”

SVDP Retail Operations Manager Matthew Griffin said financial donations to the not-for-profit charity had exceeded $2 million, with a total of 21 containers of goods arriving at the Townsville depot from communities eager to get residents back on track.

Mr Griffin said this week would mark the start of a process for residents requiring goods to be assessed by staff and volunteers from the service to ensure they received the goods they needed.

“We have received pallets of bed linen and clothing, but items are going out the door as soon as they are arriving,” Mr Griffin said.

“We are usually the last place items of furniture arrives at, so a lot of it can be quite old by the time it reaches us, but I have been blown away by the quality of the furniture from Ozcare.

Many of these items will go to many good homes of people that are less fortunate and some of these items will go into our Vinnies shops to raise funds for St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland to continue the support being provided within the community.”
