Leading with heart: Samantha’s journey into care

For Samantha, working in aged care was more than just a career change. It gave her the chance to make a difference every day by being kind.

Samantha took two years away from work to raise her young family. Later, she decided to earn her Assistant in Nursing qualification. During her studies, she did a work placement with Ozcare, which showed her that she had found her true calling.

“I applied for a job as soon as I finished my placement because the hours suited my family, and it just felt right,” Samantha said.

Now, two and a half years later, Samantha works at Ozcare St Elizabeth Villa, Mackay. She helps clients live safely, comfortably, and with dignity in the facility.

For Samantha, the best part of her job is knowing she has made someone’s day a little brighter, not just finishing tasks.

“At the end of the day, I go home feeling good because I’ve helped someone. They look happy when I leave, and that’s what matters.”

One client, a 97-year-old woman Samantha has helped for several years, is especially important to her.

“She’s so humble and so kind. Every time I see her, I’m just happy. I think, ‘Another day, you’re still here, still smiling.'”

Samantha says the support from nurses and her team gives her confidence every day. Ongoing training also helps her keep learning and provide the best care possible.

“It’s a really supportive team. If you need advice or help, there’s always someone there to help.”

When asked what advice she would give to someone thinking about working in aged care, Samantha keeps it simple.

“It’s not just about getting paid. You’ve got to have a good heart and be kind.”

For Samantha, these words are more than just advice. They are the values she brings to every shift, helping clients stay independent and building real connections that make Ozcare’s care unique.
